Alienware M17x: The Ultimate Gaming Laptop?

Are you looking for one of the best gaming laptops currently on the market? If so, the Alienware M17x could be the one for you. With a 17 inch monitor and glowing reviews from some of the industry’s top sources, such as PCMagazine.com, Laptop Magazine and io9.com, this machines reputation precedes itself. And why shouldn’t it? The M17x comes with a built-in Blu-ray drive, 1200p LCD display, 8 GB of memory, two Nvidia GeForce GTX graphics cards and a Core 2 Duo Quad processor. Salivating yet? You should be, but keep in mind it will run you in the neighborhood of $4,000 if you want all of the upgrades, which you should, as it runs noticeably better with them. The Alienware M17x runs beautifully, and I’m not the only reviewer who admits that as a gaming laptop it’s hard to beat. Not everything about it is wonderful, unfortunately. As you’ve already seen, the Alienware M17x is not by any means cheap. If you want to spend less money you can forego the upgrades and get the basic model for around $2,400. The basic version comes with a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 4 GB of RAM, a single GeForce GTX graphic card and the 900p display. It’s not nearly as powerful as the fully upgraded version, but it will still get the job done with memory to spare.

The other problem with it is the weight. The Alienware M17x tips the scales at a massive 11.7 pounds. The whole point of owning a laptop is portability, so you may want to hit the gym before investing in one of these babies. Speaking of portability, don’t forget to bring your charger along with you when you leave the house, because the Alienware M17x gets less than two hours of battery life per charge. Turning down the performance will allow you to squeeze another 30 minutes of life out of the battery, but even that isn’t enough to compete with the battery power of comparable laptops, such as the Asus G51Vx-Rx05.

The Alienware M17x laptop is an incredible machine. Newer titles like Crysis and Batman: Arkham Asylum will run great with power to spare. Older titles such as World of Warcraft can be run without even breaking a sweat. It’s both powerful and beautiful, but isn’t totally perfect and comes at a hefty price. If money is of no concern to you, the Alienware M17x really can’t be beat.
